Tradition in Menorca"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>One of the most important events of the year is undoubtedly the Sant Joan festivities in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vacalia.com\/en\/ciutadella-menorca-p1310\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ciutadella<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vacalia.com\/en\/holiday-home-menorca\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.vacalia.com\/en\/holiday-home-menorca\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Menorca<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fiestas are normally held from the 1st to the 25th of June, with the 23rd and 24th being the most important days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we are going to talk about one of the most important celebrations that precedes the most important days and which is not so well known, the <strong>Diumenge des Be, which is celebrated on the Sunday before Sant Joan.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The festival of Sant Joan in Menorca dates back to the beginning of the 14th century, and has important traditions such as the \u00abDiumenge des Be\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"670\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vacalia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Diumenge-des-Be1.jpg\" alt=\"Diumenge des Be\" class=\"wp-image-5348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vacalia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Diumenge-des-Be1.jpg 670w, https:\/\/www.vacalia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Diumenge-des-Be1-300x134.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Diumenge des Be<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This celebration has transcended the local sphere, attracting thousands of visitors every year, especially from the other Balearic Islands and Catalonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What is the \u00abDiumenge des Be\u00bb or day of the lamb?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u00abDiumenge des Be\u00bb is celebrated <strong>on the Sunday before Sant Joan (Saint John&#8217;s Day)<\/strong>, a prologue to the festivities. Originally, on this day, alms were also collected for the organisation of the festivities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To understand this special day, it is necessary to know its protagonists:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>The Homo des Be<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year a man is designated as the \u00abHomo des Be\u00bb. He must carry a horned lamb chosen by the \u00abCaixer Pag\u00e9s\u00bb. During the previous week, on the farm of the \u00abCaixer Pag\u00e9s\u00bb, the ram, the protagonist of the weekend, is washed in order to leave its wool immaculate white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Saturday, the ram is taken from the \u00abCaixer Pag\u00e8s\u00bb estate to its inn in Ciutadella, where the \u00abvetlla des Be\u00bb begins at 9 pm. Throughout the night and early morning, the ram, placed on a wooden platform, will be visited by the inhabitants of Ciutadella and the whole of Menorca. It will be the centre of attention, attracting the attention of people of all ages who will want to take photos with it. In Ciutadella, listening to the music of the \u00abFabioler\u00bb is synonymous with revelry. Afterwards, the procession led by \u00abEl Homo des Be\u00bb will continue its route through the streets of the municipality, visiting the town hall, the Episcopal palace, the Born theatre, where the traditional zarzuela \u00abFoc i Fum\u00bb is performed, the geriatric hospital, the social entities, the stately palaces and the houses of the \u00abcavallers\u00bb (riders similar to the Caixers), with the aim of inviting them to attend the festivities on the 23rd and 24th of June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tour can have more than 100 scheduled visits to different parts of the city, a journey that lasts all day until late at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On special occasions, \u00abtocs de dol\u00bb are held to honour those who have died in the home during the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the retinue visits the houses of the \u00abcavallers\u00bb, in the afternoon-evening, the \u00abses avellanes\u00bb or \u00abhazelnut war\u00bb is celebrated, the tradition consists of throwing hazelnuts in the Avenida de la Constituci\u00f3n, between the Bar de Cal\u00f3s and the Pla\u00e7a de Ses Palmeres, while the Ciutadella music band performs.
